How to Make Money so the Money will Make You
Marketing Your Website
From a "searchers" perspective, there are two general places websites turn up on search engines such as Google. From an internet developers perspective, there are two very different processes to get a website on the first page of the search engine.
Website Searches
The two places where websites turn up on search engines simply are the left hand side of the page, where the natural or organic search results appear, and the right hand side, where the sponsored or advertised links appear.
To successfully get a website to appear on the left hand side of the search
engines, an internet developer must attempt to get his website to convince
the search engines it is the most relevant website in the world, for the given
search phrases he thinks are important. This is no mean feat given the
search engines never give out their rules for measuring relevance.
To successfully get a website to appear on the right hand side of the search engines, an internet advertiser will pick his search phrases, write his advertisement and then try and outbid the competition for his phrases by offering more money to the search engine, for every time someone clicks through his listing.
Sponsored Links and Adwords Advertising
From a web advertising perspective, using Adwords to sponsor links is
immediate and precise. We control exactly what words and search variations
we advertise on, how much we spend on them and what our ads are. It is
similar to purchasing advertising space, only we pay when the adverts are
successful (Ie people click through) rather than when the adverts appear. So
we actually pay for qualified leads, as opposed to advertising space. There is
no limit to the terms we concentrate on with Adwords, we just ad them in as
we think of them. Here is a great resource for learning the art of Pay per Click advertising: Learn how to sell your product cheaply and effectively using sponsored links
Search Engine Optimisation
With the Search Engine Optimisation (SEO), its a more long term process. Its not something we "switch on" like Adwords, but a process of refinement, convincing the search engines our website is the most relevant website for the search terms we want. Its a less precise process and therefore we only can concentrate on a handful of terms. But once the website gets up into the first page for these terms, the site will attract a lot more traffic than Adwords will for those terms, and all clicks are free. Internet Marketing Strategy
These two forms of web advertising can be used independently or together.
It can be a particularly effective strategy though to use Adwords to find
the most effective search phrases for your product (ie the ones people use when buying as opposed
to browsing) and then start an SEO process a little bit later focusing in on
those words.
