Building a Career vs Making a Living
Do you see yourself as someone who is building a career, or someone who is making a living? I guess before we can answer that, we need to look at what these things mean.
A “career”, as we know it today, typically describes the main stream of remunerative work we do through the course of your life. Building a career then, is going through a process of improvement to ensure you progress as far as you can, with your career being the "end" in its own right. Making a living on the other hand, seems more "life" focused. It seems to refer to making money so you can live. The activity may still be the same, but the focus is different. When you make a living, life is away from the office. When you build a career, life is the office.
Think a little about the concept of career, in terms of the history of mankind. It really has not been around long, only a couple of hundred years. It is an aberration. Large corporations invented the concept to make sure you would feel like you were part of something "bigger", while working towards their goals. Think about the continual development of telecommunications. Workforces are decentralising, are careers even going to be around in another 100 years? Who knows?
If you are honest with yourself, you will see that all your “career” ultimately is, is your progression through a bunch of opportunities someone else has provided for you, while they tell you where you fit in and what your value is.
Are you one of those people who builds a career as if it is the single most important thing you can do? If so, you are probably another person who is dissatisfied with your job. Lets face it, its all work, its all someone else's decisions, its all for someone else's goals. Why is it such an important thing in your life then? Why is it sometimes even more important than life itself?
Its funny you know, as a child when my parents went out for dinner, being baby sat definitely was not the highlight of my week. But thats what we do in our career, we are baby sat, letting others tell us our worth and what to do. When I was a child, living my life by playing with my brothers and friends was way more important than work of any kind. Why do we change as adults? Why do we start measuring our success and life through someone else's eyes? Why do we let them direct our paths? Why have careers become so important?
I stopped building a career years ago. I actually packed my bags, left the busy city streets of Sydney and moved to the surf on the Gold Coast. I realised how fickle a career way of life was when I was passed up for a promotion, losing out to the boss's office romance. It was not even a value decision. So I "make a living" now instead. I’m not sure if you noticed, but the term is simply about life and its easily the best perception shift and decision I've ever made in my life.
Thats what careerists often forget I think. We are on this earth to live. We are here to learn our own lessons, in our own time. We are here to experience, grow and love. We are here to find and define our own value, not have someone do it for us. This is what so many people sacrifice when building a career.
And that is the thing that I really love about internet marketing. Sure, you need to learn some skills for writing successful webpages, optimising on the search engines and the like, but they are just technical skills which anyone can learn. That aside, the thing that is so beautiful about making a living on the internet, is that the only type of internet business you will succeed in, are businesses on topics you are passionate about.
The reason for this is simple. Every topic in the world carries to some degree, its own language. How often have you met someone, they tell you what they do, and you just can't understand what they are talking about. This happens because every subject, every passion, and every interest in the world, to varying degrees, have their own language. It is only when you are passionate about a topic that you will understand the language. It is only when you know this language that you will be able to reach the people who share your passion and sell them the real value you have to offer. This, for better or worse, is the internet way.
This is why it is such a pleasure making a living on the internet. Remember those career minded people, and the way they have turned their work into their whole life, often to the exclusion of life. This is the opposite. This is when you turn your life and your passions into an enterprise that props up your life, and draws you further into your passions. This is the real beauty of internet marketing. This is why I’ll never do anything else
